In their latest wave of attacks, Maoist rebels in India have killed 17 security personnel in the troubled west of the country. Police sources said at least 150 Maoists attacked the security forces in forests in the Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra State on Thursday. "One senior officer and 16 constables have died," police inspector S.D. Mundhe was quoted by the AFP news agency as saying. The rebels have been fighting for more than three decades in several Indian states. They claim to be struggling for the rights of landless farmers and neglected tribesmen in the impoverished eastern and central states. The Maoist insurgency has spread to twenty states and claimed more than 600 lives since the beginning of the year. The Maoists' rebellion has cost thousands of lives, including those of the police, militants and civilians, over the past years. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has called the Maoist-led violence the single biggest threat to the country's security.
